Liberty County Airport Takes Wing at Fort Stewart
Published Aug 21, 2008

Clear skies are ahead for corporate and private aviation aircraft flying to Liberty County or its surrounding communities.

MidCoast Regional Airport at Wright Army Airfield opened to the public in November 2007 on the Fort Stewart military base. The joint-use airport is a partnership between the City of Hinesville, Fort Stewart, the Liberty County Board of Commissioners and the Liberty County Development Authority.

“For many years, the only air service for the public in Liberty County was an old airfield with a short, 3,700-foot strip runway, and its terminal was a tiny building where the toilet might or might not have been operating,” says Ronald Tolley Liberty County Development Authority CEO.

The county initiated discussions with Fort Stewart about utilizing Wright Army Airfield as a joint-use facility. Tolley says it took about five years to work through the details, but an agreement was finally reached, followed by a $10 million renovation.

MidCoast has two 5,000-foot runways and plans are in the works to soon extend one of the runways to 6,500 feet. MidCoast Regional Airport now leases terminal space to the military, where Fort Stewart personnel have access to a new and spacious building.

“It’s easy for civilians to fly their corporate and private planes without hampering any military operations,” Tolley says.
