Georgia’s first corn-based ethanol plant is set to begin production in October.

First United Ethanol LLC, will operate on a 268-acre site in Mitchell County near Albany, Ga., with an annual production capacity of 100 million gallons. The company raised $75 million for the project.

Murray Campbell, president and chairman of First United Ethanol, says criticism of the technology in the news media in recent months has been filled with “misperceptions.” Campbell said news reports blaming rising corn prices on increasing demand for corn-based ethanol oversimplify reality. He said other factors are driving up the price of corn and food in general, including growing demand in developing countries like India and China, higher fuel costs, the current drought and the weak U.S. dollar.
